That woman was gorgeous. I knew she was Man Ray’s muse, and a photographer in her own right, but I had no idea she started out as fashion model for Vogue. Fun to go through the archives.

Did she even come up in the book of collaborative artists I read about? (The Third Hand by Charles Green – why is it that I so many of the art books pertinent to my subject are by non-American authors?) I don’t think that Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller’s collaboration as a form of intimacy will be much more than a long footnote…

Another long footnote (or paragraph): Dana Augaitis and The Banff Centre for Arts keeps coming up…. that and Rirkrit Tiravanija (because his medium is “interaction”). Augaitis and Sylvie Gilbert apparently curated/edited “a groundbreaking exhibition and catalogue, Between Views in 1991″… the same year Cardiff was there and made her first audio Walk. I am starting to suspect that Augaitis might have influenced Cardiff and Miller. This is all from the book I was reading on my Laughlin trip, Lucy Lippard’s On the Beaten Track: Tourism, Art, and Place. (oops, she’s American) Another mention that keeps coming up: the Center for Land Use Interpretation. The picture on p. 20 (I’m not very far along) shows a CLUI Giant Rock tour out in Landers! That’s only a few miles from the Integratron which I wrote about – and practically in my home town. The picture in Lippard’s book was taken before Giant Rock split.

then. I always forget that this is a local tourist attraction. now.
I am glad that I am not the only one who doesn’t know “the whole truth about the Center for Land Use Interpretation…” Doug Harvey from the LA Weekly says there’s a new book that’s going to shed some light on the whole deal. Read the article here. And get this, the CLUI headquarters are next door to the Museum of Jurassic Technology – and Ralph Rugoff has an essay in there (how’s that for an art world stamp-of-approval?) Makes me think I have a couple more ILLs to order.

According to e-flux, there is a show of Lee Miller prints going on in Germany … doesn’t do me any good here in the desert, but the link to her archive site proved interesting.
