My brother is still whooping it up in SE Asia (as his 40th birthday looms near on the 21st of September…) and I got this email from him this morning:<\/p>\n
“forgot to mention that i bribed a cop today when i got pulled over on
\nmy scooter.<\/p>\n
rented a scooter to get around.\u00c2\u00a0 was looking for a movie theater
\n(another story) and did a uturn on a one-way street when a cop
\nstanding on the sidewalk waved for me to pull over:<\/p>\n
cop: “one way”
\nme: “uh”
\ncop: “fine.\u00c2\u00a0 station.\u00c2\u00a0 more.”
\nme: “uh”
\ncop: silent
\nme: (watching about 20 other motorbikes go the wrong way down the
\none-way street)
\ncop: silent
\nme:\u00c2\u00a0 “fine?\u00c2\u00a0 how much?”
\ncop: “up to you”
\nme: “how about 4,000 riel?” (4,200 riel = $1)
\ncop:\u00c2\u00a0 laughs
\nme:\u00c2\u00a0 “i don’t have a job and they just cancelled my unemployment
\nbenefits because they think i’m whooping it up in bangkok” (didn’t
\nreally say this, just thought it)
\ncop: “$5”
\nme: <gasp> “that’s how much it cost me to rent my scooter for one day”
\n(almost true.\u00c2\u00a0 it was $6)
\ncop: “cambodia very cheap”
\nme: <hmmmm> “$3?”
\ncop: “ok”<\/p>\n
then the cop took me over to a nearby street stall so i could buy a
\nrain poncho (it was raining).\u00c2\u00a0 as i pulled away, he waved me over
\nagain and before i could finish calculating in my head how much more i
\nwas going to have to pay him he leaned over and turned off my turn
\nsignal which i had left on.”<\/p>\n
