All pees and poos on that 20-hour trip home went directly into the toilet.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nI&#8217;ve been asked to speak on the topic of elimination communication to the moms of local attachment parenting group (AP Living) who meet weekly. These are the notes that I will expand upon during my talk.<\/p>\n<p>I. Definition of Elimination Communication (the EC spectrum)<br \/>\nII. My Story \u00e2\u20ac\u201c started full-time at 3 mo., used cloth diapers, graduated at 23 mo.<br \/>\nIII. Tools and Accessories<br \/>\n     a. Potties \u00e2\u20ac\u201c several, for easy access (I like BabyBjorn), the sink, the great outdoors (rule of thumb: go where it would be appropriate for a dog)<br \/>\n     b. Easy-access clothing \u00e2\u20ac\u201c split crotch pants, vests, leg warmers<br \/>\nIV. Getting Started (often you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll use a combination of these techniques)<br \/>\n     a. Timing \u00e2\u20ac\u201c upon waking, every half hour or hour, depends on time of day<br \/>\n     b. Intuition \u00e2\u20ac\u201c you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll develop a feeling<br \/>\n     c. Cuing \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a sound, like hissing or shushing or grunting for poos<br \/>\n     d. Baby\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s signals and cues \u00e2\u20ac\u201c squirming, crying, arching back<br \/>\nV. Tips for Success (from Ingrid Bauer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s book)<br \/>\n     a. Offer potty opportunity as soon as baby wakes up.<br \/>\n     b. Always offer potty opportunity before going out.<br \/>\n     c. Make regular pit stops en route.<br \/>\n     d. Try to potty when you arrive.<br \/>\n     e. Offer potty opp. whenever you undress baby (for bath, changing, or sleep).<br \/>\n     f. Choose clothes and diapers that are easy and quick to remove.<br \/>\n     g. If using diapers, try cloth diapers without covers.<br \/>\n     h. Make a cuing sound anytime you notice your child going, even if it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a miss.<br \/>\n     i. Act quickly on the slightest thought or intuition about pottying.<br \/>\n     j. If one thing isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t working, try something different; stay flexible.<br \/>\n     k. If you encounter challenges, continue offering regularly, and respect a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153no.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\n     l. Avoid pressure; stay relaxed and patient.<br \/>\n     m.
