\"\"<\/a>We’re squeezing in one more late spring\/early summer playgroup cycle before we break until autumn. That completes our third year!<\/p>\n

As per usual, most of the handplays and poems come from Betty Jones’ A Child’s Seasonal Treasury<\/em> plus a song from Elisabeth Lebret’s Pentatonic Songs<\/em>. The story will be a continuation of The Root Children<\/em>. The craft will be birthday crowns (with lovely 100% wool felt from purl soho<\/a> – yes, it costs $56\/yard.) Our opening songs and closing songs remain the same and can be found in earlier posts.<\/p>\n

The book discussion will be The Happiness Project<\/em>. I wanted a shorter, lighter book, since in September we are going to tackle Jon Young’s Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature<\/em>. On our pending bookshelf:\u00c2\u00a0 soule mama’s Handmade Home<\/em>, Boys Alive!<\/em>, and another parenting book that-I-will-post-the-name-of-when-I-remember.<\/p>\n

Seashell Song<\/strong> by Betty Jones
\nCan you hear the sea’s song in this little shell? (Cup hands and place in lap.)<\/em>
\nHold it up to your ear and listen, listen well. (Put cupped hands to ear; listen.)<\/em>
\nShish-shoo-ooh.
\nThe seashell’s song is from the silvery sea, (Lower cupped hands, sway them side to side.)<\/em>
\nWhere the waves roll in, wild and free. (Make rolling wave motion with hands, moving in, then out.)<\/em>
\nShish-shoo-ooh!
\nThere upon the sand, the lovely seashell lies, (Cup hands and place in lap.)<\/em>
\nUntil a little child finds this seaside prize. (Cup hands to heart.)<\/em>
\nShish-shoo-ooh!
\nSo guard this shell, its life-long song, (Cross hands at heart.)<\/em>
\nAnd remember the home where it belongs
\nShish-shoo-ooh! (Cup hands around mouth and voice loudly.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Fairy Ring<\/strong>
\nRound about, round about in a fairy ring, (sashaying around circle)<\/em>
\nThus we dance, thus we dance, and thus we sing! (go to center)<\/em>
\nTrip and go, to and fro, over the grass we go (sashaying around circle)<\/em>
\nAll about in and out, for our Flower Queen\/King. (go to center)<\/em>

\nIn my head count windows seven,

\nPoint each way, that makes six,

My Horses<\/strong>
\nMy white horses like to step
\nPeaceful and slow,
\nOver mountains, through valleys,
\nSo upright they go.<\/p>\n

My brown horses merrily
\nTrot in the sun,
\nWith their silver hoofs beating
\nThe ground as they run.<\/p>\n

My black horses gallop
\nWith courage around,
\nAnd they throw up their heads
\nAs they hammer the ground.<\/p>\n

(Children enact horse movements described, moving in one directon around circle. Repeat in opposite direction.)<\/em><\/p>\n

At the Beach<\/strong> by Betty Jones
\nBuild a sand castle to the sky, Pat air; move hands upward.<\/em>
\nMake a moat so when the waves roll by Make a big circle with arms in front of body.<\/em>
\nThe castle will stand with its sandy wall Hold arms upright with fingertips touching.<\/em>
\n‘Til high tide comes and then it will fall. Fingers flutter at rooftop, and slowly flutter downward to lap.<\/em><\/p>\n

Children’s Prayer<\/strong> Music by Elisabeth Lebret
\nThe golden sun, so great and bright
\nWarms the world with all its might.<\/p>\n

It makes the dark earth green and fair
\nAnd tends each thing with ceaseless care.<\/p>\n

It shines on blossom, stone, and tree
\nOn bird and beast, on you and me!<\/p>\n

Oh, may each deed throughout the day,
\nMay ev’rything we do and say<\/p>\n

Be bright and strong and true,
\nOh! Golden sun! Like you!<\/p>\n

Sunshine Fairies<\/strong>
\nWe are the sunshine fairies
\nAnd with our sparks of light
\nWe shimmer and glimmer in the air
\nHugging flowers with colors bright!<\/p>\n

Begin standing in a circle; children hold out their arms at their sides and turn in place clockwise as fairies. Stop, and flick fingers as sparks. Hold out arms at sides, flutter fingers, then turn in place counterclockwise; hug self and rub hands up and down over folded arms.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
