art day in LA

Gorgeous! Totally worth dragging two preteens plus boyfriend into LA for the day. We’ve watched this building go up over the years – but seeing it, really walking around and checking it out was something else. It reminded my daughter of “that really circle-y building with the boring art – the one I always play I Spy in” (= Guggenheim).

Then I gave her strict instuctions in MOCA to see all the artwork, BEFORE going to the gift shop. Not five minutes later, I received the two following pics on my phone:

I mean, geez, I know art is boring for kids, but she’s got to spend at least a little bit of time looking at Rauschenberg’s combines, right? Well, in the end, she watched some more of the movie downstairs (I made her come back) – and she liked the angora goat with the tire around its middle. Her friend said that the movie talked about how seeing things in life was more important than seeing things in pictures… again, not bad.

The boyfriend was not impressed either: This is the first art I’ve wanted to throw in the dumpster and Is this guy a bumbling drunk? (I think the answer is yes – there is a branch of distantly related Rauschenberg’s here in Yucca Valley – I’ve been to two Rauschenberg weddings and heard more terrible rumours than I can share here).

As for me? I’ll report more after I’ve gone back by myself on Wednesday.

Andrea Bowers show at Redcat – well, we glossed that too, seeing as it was mainly about abortion. I liked the designed paper more than the ouvert political message – and as far as anonymous letters – she goes nowhere near the Ann Hamilton piece (recent acquisition – I’ll think of the name) I saw at the Hirschorn this summer. The one where the floor and walls are completely “tiled” in beeswax and handwritten correspondence.

Highlight of the day was eating at our favorite Greek place, Papa Cristo’s. Chad had the lamb and beef gyro, I had the grilled baby octopus, Bella had falafel and hummus, and Bella’s friend refused to eat anything except the bread and and a Sprite.

Last shot – look at how much the building dresses up downtown LA.
