Bella scored two goals today!

We are at the Commissioner’s Cup this weekend, where all the first-place teams of the local divisions play each other. Bella’s two goals made it worth the trip to Temecula.

The first game we crunched the other team 5-0.

The second team was dressed in black and fierce. They played rough, and our girls really rose to the occasion. The first half ended 0-0. Then we got a penalty kick and scored. And then we scored one more. Then they got one. Then the whistle blew and we won! We are at the Commissioner’s Cup and we are still undefeated. Woo-hoo! Go Banana Splits!

buy from Schwan's to support science camp

I don’t want to make a habit of posting fundraisers, but this is a good cause: Yucca Vally Elementary School’s science camp to Catalina Island. Who doesn’t remember long painful fundraisers in school to fund 6th grade science camp? I went to Assateague Island and Mr. Kent the science teacher shaved his head after raising $200 at an informational meeting.

All you have to do is order food from Schwan’s using this campaign ID# 1002576, and the food is delivered to your door. The fundaraiser is only to December 15, 2006, so hurry. Who hasn’t stared wistfully at that refrigerated Schwan’s truck driving by?

the Golden compass (or Northern Lights)

I think Nicole Kidman is perfect as Mrs. Coulter and Daniel Craig is a good choice for Lord Asriel. Man that book was good. I may have to pick it up again.

For beautiful pics from the The Golden Compass (comes out Dec 7) go here.

There is something just freaky about the notion of your soul living in the form of an animal outside of your body – who accompanies you through life. It requires a paradigm shift – because what is the meaning of being alone when you have your daemon to speak to all the time? It is also so revealing for everybody around you to be able to see what form your soul has taken (the daemon of children in Lyra’s world shift shape until the child reaches a certain maturity.)

I also love the idea of the alethiometer: a compass that points to truth.

Miami art Basel

One of those things I wish I wasn’t missing – especially after I read this article in the NYTimes. The article does a sweeping, fast overview and mentions a lot of tantalizing new work.

demetri martin, comedian

The guy is funny! My brother sent me this link and it looked like some kind of meaningless office spam – there was a heading saying it was somebody’s weird latest web campaign – but it is no campaign at all.

It is the absolutely charming website of a comedian demetri martin. I think it may one of the most clever, low-key websites I have encountered. One webisode can take ten minutes – so visit when you need a break.

I liked when he talked about what a strange mix of pleasure and disgust you get when you step in dog poop. You’re walking, Hard, Hard, Hard and then suddenly, Ah…cushion… before, Ew!

Maybe it’s funnier when he tells it. Anyway – it’s a bit like the Cardiff Miller thing – where he draws you in intimately. You feel like you are listening to a very funny friend tell you stories.

His site is called www.clearification.com.

Here are some screen shots from his site since I bet most of you will never make it there. That’s not a dare – just a fact. I never click through either. In fact, Mr. Martin says that probably today’s worst insult is, click off!

If you go there, make sure your volume is up.

El Blog Diablogica

I found another blog I think I like. The guy lives between London and Guatamala, and so far he sounds smart and talks about stuff that interests me. I’ll put his link here for a while and see if he makes the blogroll cut (I have to want to check it almost everyday). He also appears to know one of the boingboing people – and since boingboing is the blog at the very top of the hit list – he is probably part of the hip blog crowd in cyberspace.

Did I mention that I am now aspiring to be a professional blogger? My friend John suggests that I aim for 5,000 hits a day by January 2007.

No way can it survive that late? Who will stay up? and does TiVo help Nelson ratings?

But if for nostalgia’s sake you want to read about all the loose ends going on in Lost, go to this site here. There are 50 loose ends discussed, starting with, Are the Others the same as the Dharma Initiative? (Anybody want to make a $5 bet?)

The World’s Largest Photograph

The following information came from The Orange County Great Park Corporation. They made a camera out of an airplane hangar!
WHO:
The Legacy Project Photographers:    Jerry Burchfield, Mark Chamberlain, Jacques Garnier, Rob Johnson, Douglas McCulloh, and Clayton Spada.

WHAT:
The Legacy Project photographers to reveal their secrets on a remarkable photographic project that created the world’s largest camera to produce the world’s largest photograph.

The Guinness Book of Records has confirmed that the giant camera and 2,500 square-foot photograph (World’s Largest Photograph) warrants consideration as a new world record; the rigorous Guiness Book certification process is currently underway.

The process of creating this camera and photograph represents a significant historical event. Based upon the Camera Obscura (Latin for ‘dark room’) principal of the original design from which all cameras evolved, an actual airplane hangar was turned into a gigantic camera obscura by The Legacy Project.

The gigantic photograph, which is three stories high by eleven stories long, memorializes a central part of Marine Corps Air Station El Toro as it begins its transformation into Heritage Fields, and the Orange County Great Park.

This one-of-a kind hand-coated photographic print on fabric shows the former Marine Air Station air control tower, runways, the coastal hills, and the open expanse that will become the heart of the Orange County Great Park.

The World’s Largest Photograph was produced with the support of the Orange County Great Park Corporation, the Lennar Corporation, the City of Irvine, Calif., the Great Park Conservancy, Photomation, Dunn Edwards Paints, Burgess North American, Matich Corporation, Best Value Roofing, Royal Power Sweeping, United Rentals, Tony Long, and Freestyle Photographic Supplies.

eggnog season

Eggnog season means that every martini glass (2) and every brandy snifter (2) in the house is dirty, because Bella likes to drink eggnog out of fancy glasses. Does it sound like I’m raising a princess?

moving blogs

For those of you who have considered moving from one blog site (like blogger) to another (like wordpress) – wordpress actually gives you the capability of transferring over all your old posts to the new site. It looks like this:

First go to DASHBOARD, then MANAGE, and then IMPORT. Btw, this is not a plug for WordPress – but people I barely know email me and ask me this stuff. I bet most blogging platforms have this function.

Although come to think of it, wordpress does have a function I really enjoy, which is that it gives me a lot of information about who’s visiting my site. For instance here is a pic of my blog stats from the last 30 days (ranging from 29 hits to 220 hits the day before Thanksgiving):
