Oriental-Style Noodles, Anchovy Flavor

During the move I discovered a stash of instant noodle soups called “Oriental-style Noodles, Anchovy Flavor.” Normally these kinds of things languish at the the back of my pantry, not because I don’t like them (anchovy sounds delicious to me!), but because I can rarely justify eating any packaged food that only requires boiling water. However, not only are we crammed for space in our new abode, but I find that a new three-month old keeps me very very busy. And so I am now regularly enjoying my anchovy-flavored soups for lunch… they’re actually pretty tasty and made with yummy rice noodles.

Very busy is putting it mildly –

And it’s not just the baby and and moving houses, but I realized the other day that we have had house guests continuously (and without even a day’s break) for the last entire month. Which is my long-winded explanation for why I have posted so infrequently lately.

Which is not say that I don’t love my house guests; all of them were a tremendous help before, during, and after the move and I really enjoyed the company. It just means that I can finally go through the month’s worth of mail stacked on my desk.

The baby is asleep in my sling right now. I am sitting very upright and typing to the sound of his gentle snoring. He is clutching his own hands. Little guy is all tuckered out from impressing me earlier. Christian is so mellow that I think he’s capable of doing things physically that he’s not aware of yet. For instance, I remember Bella at two months, struggling with all her might to raise up her head, when she was on her belly. She struggled and strained until she could do it. Christian at three months, on the other hand, seems to hold his head up well when he’s in my arms, but has never previously tried the arm supported head raise that looks just like the yoga position “cobra.”

Then suddenly this morning he woke up from a nap, supported himself with his arms, raised up his head, and looked around the room. He smiled when he found me. Imagine, completely immobile worm to self-rotating periscope in the space of an hour. He has also started smiling and chuckling heartily. Very adorable.

I am starting to discern Christian’s pattern of sleeping. Because I’m not working (very much) at the moment, and because the baby has been relatively non-fussy, I haven’t set up any kind napping routine for Christian. He doesn’t seem to mind riding the ebb and flow of our slightly chaotic household as long as he can nap against my chest whenever he wants to. He loves the sling.

Instead, Christian has developed his own routine to match ours. That is, he wakes bright and early between 5:30 and 6 am, which is when Chad wakes up anyway. He goes down for a solid morning nap by 9am. This is my golden time when only do things I CAN’T do when he’s awake. Gold time is when Christian is sleeping so deeply that he’ll sleep alone on the bed. Gold time activities include writing and paperwork, but not laundry, unpacking, or cleaning. Right now is silver time, when he’s sleeping, but in the sling. I can work on the computer, but only for short stints.

Platinum time is when he’s awake and grinning at me…

The following is not the most flattering picture of Christian I’ve ever taken (his diminishing sty is showcased), but before this picture, Christian had never looked up like this before! So for the folks back home:

Can you fathom that Sue was worried that her kid wouldn’t be as cute as Bella? Look at them – equally adorable!

Hode de door!

This one is funny. I thieved it from dooce.com and I justify this thievery because people have actually told me that they never go to read dooce.com.

???

I think she’s funny and she usually makes me laugh. Also I enjoy her sense of design. In any case, here’s the Aunt Jemima! video she posted. It’s long (3:46 min), but you won’t regret it.

Our cute little pup died yesterday while Chad was at work. We believe she ingested something that her body couldn’t handle, because she had had the runs for about 12 hours prior. She was in her normal sleeping position when Chad found her, so we think she passed peacefully in her sleep. In this photo taken last week, she is being walked by my niece Nabi Grace. The photo was taken by her dad, Joss.

Swing Dancing in San Francisco

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jez-dtD1CXc&NR=1]

I tell people I majored in English Literature at McGill, but the truth is that for the five years I was at McGill, school was really secondary to my main passion, which was night clubbing. I threw myself into the night scene in Montreal with a passion – not just because I loved people and the higher-than-average rate of serendipitious incidents between two and six am  – but because I have always loved dancing. My friend Chantelle and I would regularly go dancing five nights a week: Wednesday and Thursdays were less busy and so there was always a clear dance floor, but then how could we stay away on the hoppin’ Friday and Saturday nights? Sunday nights were down nights too, so mellower and often free entrance. Well, as young women wearing short dresses and big smiles we rarely EVER paid to get in a club, or for drinks, or anything else for that matter. It was a straight-to-the-front-of-the line time of life.

And it never occurred to me then that night clubbing and dancing were going to be a part of my twenties and not my thirties or forties. I naively assumed that if I loved dancing, that I would always find the opportunities to dance. It hasn’t been as easy as all that. For a while I would slip out to a club whenever I was in a big city with friends – LA, Sydney, London, Melbourne, but quickly I discovered that the clubbing crowd was getting younger and younger and I no longer had the wardrobe, body, or moves to feel comfortable in a big city night club, so gradually dancing slipped out of my life completely.

So, I’ve followed with interest my friend Nathen’s passion for Lindy dancing over the couple years. He’s so passionate about it that he actually goes to dance marathons and dances all weekend long! He’s even given us lessons in his mom’s living room. (You can see a video of his brother Ely dancing lindy in his birthday circle last month here.)

Now I’ve just spent the last half hour deciphering Nathen’s notes on the back of my New Yorker for great places to learn the lindy in San Francisco because apparently when my brother and Nathen were helping us move, Songbae was interested in learning the Lindy himself. And since I’ve done the research now, I might as well share it in a post. This information comes from Nathen’s friend in the Bay area who is an avid dancer herself. Lindy seems like such a great way to dance and be with people, especially since it feels so “clean” (ie, no drugs, alcohol, or smoke!) Soon I’ll have to do similar research for my part of southern Orange County.

Nathen’s notes recommended four places:

  1. 9:20 Special on Thursday night at Russian Center – Dances start at 9:20 pm and go until 12:30 every Thursday night. It costs $8 and beginning lessons are available in series of four at 8:20 pm. A new series begins each month.
  2. The Doghouse at the ODC Commons is closed.
  3. In Redwood City, swing dancing is taught at Swing Central by champs Carla and Kevin. There are lots of fun videos there too. Thursday nights they offer drop-in beginner’s swing lessons from 8:15-9:15 pm and social dancing from 9:15-11:30 pm. Just social dancing (no partner required) costs only $7, while lesson plus dancing costs $12. Sounds like swing dancing is affordable entertainment.
  4. The fourth note is the only one I’m not sure if I got correctly, but I think it’s Friday Night Blues at beyondblues.com
  5. And lastly, in my internet searching, I found a blog-style listing of places to lindy hop SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. Read the column here. How very cool.

Bloodsuckers and Family

My sister and her family, some of my favorite people, are here visiting from Bangkok, which gives me very little free time to work on the computer (plus the fact that we are still unpacking…)

I’ll just share a little conversation I had with Bella and Dawkins about Stephanie Meyers’ Twilight saga to show you what’s on their minds these days. The Twilight series is huge right now with the teen girl population and involves an intense romance between an ethical vampire, that is, the stunningly handsome Edward quenches his thirst by hunting large predators instead of drinking human blood, and a teenage girl named BELLA. The last book of the saga, Breaking Dawn, was released today, but Bella got hers at midnight last night – she won a free copy in a raffle! She was pretty pleased about wearing a wristband that read WINNER and getting to move straight to the front of the line.

Bella: I loooove Edward.

Me: What? are you talking about the vampire in the book you’re reading?

B: What, you should hear Dawkins!

Me: Dawkins? You’re into this guy too?

Dawkins: OMG. I can’t stop thinking about him – He’s all I’ve thought about for the last week…

Me: ?!?

Needless to say, I was convinced to begin reading the series myself, and I am now in the middle of the third book…

Two Times Fifteen

We had intended to rent a 10-foot truck for the move yesterday, but the local Budget Truck rental place was all out and gave us a 15-footer for the same price. Two full loads later, and we’re MOVED!

Much thanks to my brother, Chad’s brother, his girlfriend, Joe, and Nathen. Including Chad, they made up one mean moving team. Bella and I were there too of course, but I was the designated baby carrier and couldn’t carry very heavy loads, and Bella – well, I guess Bella helped too, but she spent most of her energy working on her own stuff – her room at the new house is already unpacked (!!!)

Because we rarely see Joe and Nathen (once a year?) and Songbae had flown down from San Fran, the day also felt like a reunion – good times.

This is will Chad and my first place alone with the kids: our first home. It hasn’t really sunk in yet that we are a family of FOUR now. Why does four sound like so much more than three?

All of our helpers had such different reactions to the amount of stuff we had. Songbae was all, WHAT!? You didn’t hire movers? Where do the day laborers hang out – let’s get one. and You have too much stuff and it’ll never fit in this new place! (And it’s true, it won’t – we’re getting rid of more stuff.) and [groan] I’m an old man!

Whereas Joe, who has helped us move a couple times said, Hey that was a pretty painless move (he arrived later in the day.)

And Nathen, who arrived with Joe and helped us move to Orange County last summer, commented that we had quite a bit less than we did then – and this time we had Chad’s stuff too (which admittedly is not very much).

In retrospect:

  • Making oatmeal cookies, hummus, and iced tea in advance was good thing.
  • I had packed a lot in advance, but not nearly enough.
  • We should have things labeled more clearly GARAGE or HOUSE (we’ve gone from a 2-car attached to a 1-car detached and I’m a little worried I’ll never get around to using the things in my garage).
  • Freecycle.org and craigslist.com were great ways to get rid of stuff (gave away two 27″ TVs and sold our fridge this weekend).
  • You always need more boxes and packing tape (although Corrina: thank you for the packing material! It made packing my dishes and glasses a breeze.) I plan to get rid of the moving boxes with freecycle.org too.
  • I’m trying to follow the advice of my sister-in-law who always says GET YOUR KITCHEN UNPACKED FIRST.

Now for the daunting task of unpacking a new house, hopefully before my sister and her family arrive on Thursday, but definitely before we leave for the east coast August 9. Unluckily, we also have to give the old house a through scrub down by Wednesday’s inspection – our unhappy landlord is now trying to blame the condition of the already pretty gross carpet on us. Happily, Chad’s childhood friend Nathen is here for the week and will be good company. (I asked if he was regretting coming now that he could see how much needed to be unpacked, and he said, No, it looks like fun!)

Today I get to walk through our new place and get the keys.

TODAY! Even though we’ve been packing all month – we’re still not quite finished and I can see that starting today things are going to kick up a few gears, as we have a quite a moving team assembled: my brother arrives this evening from san fran and two of Chad’s childhood friends arrive tomorrow morning. Plus my brother-in-law and his girlfriend – and me (the baby-carrier) and Bella.

Our 27″ TV is sitting by the front door waiting for pick-up (through freecycle) and half the garage is brimming with packed boxes. Just about all the bedroom furniture has been moved down.

!!! I am excited about this transition. Hopefully we’ll get the contents of the fridge moved over today, as the new owners will be here tomorrow morning to pick it up (craigslist).

Besides, I have to get some food going for all these mouths.

In the meantime, I leave you with a youtube video of a Japanese prank. I laughed, but I imagine that the prank took the oomph out of their spa experience. Brrrr….

Giddy with Power

As I mentioned in a previous post, Bella and her friend from out of town (yes, Dawkins) got in a lot of trouble for sneaking out (to go swimming) at 2 am last Wednesday. Well, I had a dilemma because Dawkins had just arrived for her summer visit and it didn’t seem fair to completely ground them during her visit – so I sentenced them to no TV/computer and no cell/house phone for the duration of her visit, and several hours of hard labor everyday, after which they could go to the beach, the mall, the pool, etc. (Then Bella acted so blase about being grounded that I took away her book, the third in the Stephanie Meyers vampire love series and Bella cried!)

I know, I know, I’m a mean mom.

But YOU wake up at 2 am and find your daughter missing and then see what kind of consequences you devise when comes back at 3 am giggling.

Well, who’s giggling now? We are getting tons of cleaning done this week. It’s amazing how much work you can get out of two 14-girls who want to get to the pool before noon.

A sample chore list from earlier this week:

  • Wash the blinds (every slat in the house was wiped down)
  • Thoroughly scrub and clean Bella’s bathroom
  • Laundry
  • Pack for three weeks (so she has clothes during the moving transition)
  • Empty and pack her dresser
  • Wash and clean the stairway railing

Other notable cleaning accomplishments this week: all the windows got windexed, all the visible floorboards got washed, and the back half of the pantry is packed and clean!

The way things are going, I’m going to mind the next time she gets in trouble.
