Leafy Green Soup

Eating all the greens in our CSA basket every two weeks is proving to be a challenging task – but something I know is worth the effort.

The last few times we got a huge leafy green thing with a large bulb at the bottom called broccoli raab. By huge I mean the thing was as long as my arm and would barely fit in my fridge. After throwing away two, I finally got the courage to pull the third one out of the fridge to wash and chop it up. According the the CSA recipes from South Coast Farm, the entire thing was edible – bulb and leafies all. The bulb needed the outer skin removed and tasted like a fresh broccoli stalk. I don’t know if it’s just been all the rain we’ve been having, but one broccoli raab made a gigantic pile of greens.I put water, a few chopped hot Italian sausages, 4-5 chopped potatoes, and all the broccoli raab into the crock pot. It made a delicious soup!

I can’t believe what a chicken I’ve been about trying it out. Now I have a bowl of that soup  a day and I feel like Pop-eye eating his spinach. Now I need to get through all the tatsoi and green chard…We got three varieties of broccoli this week too. Cream of Broccoli is up after I make a borscht with all the beets.

Giddy with Points

Songbae has just given Sue and I a really fun gift.

A really, really fun gift.

He said, “Hey you guys, I don’t have time to use my credit card reward points – want ’em?”

Heck yeah we do. He has 111, 211 socked away on a site where a 160 gig ipod is 47,000 points!! Check out the things you can get with reward points here.

So despite the fact that we are already drowning in ipods at this house, that’s what we’re getting with our half of the points. The deal is, Chad gets the new 160 G, I get his “old” 80G, and Bella gets his “old” Bose ipod dock speaker. (He argues that he uses his ipod more than any other possession he has ever had…) And actually we discovered that if we cash the points in for gift cards at Circuit City and then buy the 160 G ipod there, that we will have $70 leftover and used less points than if we bought the ipod at the reward site directly. See all the scheming fun we’re having?

Sue and Joss  have already picked out their share of goodies too.

Which still leaves enough leftover for about $$150 worth of gift cards. I am so getting a pair of maternity blue jeans!

I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

I’ve just received yet another package of hand-me-down baby goodies from yet another friend. That makes six or seven baby packages I’ve received now, not including all the gifts pressed into my hands every time I walk into another mother’s house. I’m getting books, baby clothes, cloth diapers, bibs, maternity clothes, lanolin (for my soon-to-be nursing boobs), a snugli baby carrier, baby blankets, a lambskin, and more!

It’s wonderful how impending babies create such a spirit of generosity and support. I remember this as mom of a young one; there was an never-ending of baby goods being passed from one mother to the next. I always had one box of clothes Bella could grow into and another box of things she’d outgrown, ready to pass along.

That, plus that fact that I actually sent out my new year’s cards this year and a group of old college friends have gotten in touch with me via facebook means that I am suddenly catching up with lots of terrific friends sending out good vibes. I really feel buoyed up by love and positive support.

Even my mom, for whom my last pregnancy was a near-catastrophe (because of the baby’s father and the fact that I had not yet won the Nobel Prize), is sending me packages of maternity clothes regularly; it’s like she can’t walk by a billowy blouse or a moo-moo and not think of me.

Thanks Everybody! (sniff)

26 Week Pregnancy Update

Freaky thought: according the the book Your Pregnancy Week-by-Week by Glades Curtis, if my baby were born right now, he (Christian Holden Murdy) or she (Sophia Rose Murdy) would mostly likely live. The baby should be about two pounds now and his/her eyes will be opening any day!

Last week Chad and I went and had a consultation with Karen Baker, the midwife who attended Bella’s birth fourteen years ago. This was an exciting event for me because to have our baby at home attended by Karen, a midwife I trust and admire, would be the foundation for a second perfect labor and birth. Many things have changed over the last fourteen years, not least the fact that Karen is now a licensed midwife (#11). When we had Bella, before midwifery licensure in California even existed, midwifery was technically ILLEGAL and Bella’s dad and I had to rehearse a script of what we would say in the event I had to be transported to a hospital. Today, midwifery has made such huge gains that most of of the cost of a birth at home with a midwife ($3,200) would be covered by our health insurance (PPO with Blue Shield). That is, after the $300 deductible, the insurance will cover either 90% or 70%, depending on if she is treated as an in-network health practitioner. It’s good to hear that some things in this world have gotten better.

The only glitch, however, is that she lives nearly 1 1/2 hours away from me in Yucaipa. She doesn’t normally take clients who live more than an hour away, but she said she would take us.

I don’t suspect that my labor will be fast, as I was in labor all weekend with Bella, though second babies tend to come more quickly. In any case, Chad and I are sitting on the decision. There is another midwifery center in Irvine about twenty minutes from here and they also give free consultations. What if we like the midwives there just as well? I don’t think that’s likely, but I’m trying to be reasonable.

I’m all good for just going with Karen right now, but I’ve agreed to wait before deciding, and even meet with the other midwives should Chad want to do so.

Having my prenatal with Karen was so PLEASURABLE. What, with her entirely calm and warm presence, the hot pregnancy tea, and her exclamations of “What a pretty belly!” and “Hello Baby!” I felt deeply nurtured and comforted. My uterus measures 26 cm from the pubic symphysis, which is right on track for being 26 weeks along. Chad sat on the edge of the bed while Karen palpated my belly and pointed out the head, back and baby’s behind. Then we listened to the baby’s very fast heartbeat and the baby’s hiccups! And Chad said, “I get hiccups all the time too.”

We listened to the placenta too, which sounded like a wind rushing through willow trees. She even recognized the sound of the umbilical cord; it’s the heart beat, but with a swishing sound.

I am getting excited to meet this new person growing inside me. I think Chad is too. Yesterday, he reminded ME that we had to go upstairs and practice our relaxation techniques!

Oscar Night

I see women on stage like Cate Blanchett and Jessica Alba, pregnant and all dressed up, and all I can do is be thankful is that I am home curled up next to my husband, wearing comfy stretch pants, eating pizza and drinking Sprite, and posting during the commercials and long montages. I can’t imagine how much preparation would have gone into being ready for an event like that. Even just at 26 weeks, getting dressed for work four days a week is an undertaking that makes me cringe. And sitting in one place for more than a half hour is down right painful.

It’s one of the days of the year that Chad and I really enjoy knowing that we’ll spend it together. We plan days ahead what we’ll eat (the two new tuscan pizzas at papa john’s) and from the moment we wake up we schedule the day to end up in front of the TV by 5:30 (though it was close this year – but we managed to fit in grocery shopping, running show shopping and watching Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution).

He maintains that 95% of the time the oscar winners are the same as the Screen Actors’ Guild awards which happened a month ago or so. But guess what? Marion Cotillard just won Best Actress and that was my guess weeks ago! Julie Christie won at the SAG awards and certainly gave a terrific performance in Away from Her, but just seeing Cotillard at the Oscar’s – seeing how young and vibrant she is – and realizing just how much she stretched to play an obsessive talented singer from youth to death in La Vie en Rose, makes you realize how deserving she is of this year’s Oscar.

And I hope the song “Falling Slowly” from Once (my sister calls it ‘on-che’) wins Best Original Song…

And on the subject of movies, here’s a gem of a review sent to me by John. You’ll smile, I promise. (Thanks John!)

The Squid and the Blah Blah

We’ve almost finished watching Margot at the Wedding and the family dynamics are so awful that it’s making me feel nauseous.

Worse even because I think I can be as mean as Margot.

I don’t think I want to watch any more movies written by that guy, the guy who also wrote The Squid and the Whale.

A Bella Riddle

Bella: “Hey Mom! What do you call one of those things that looks like a giant CD and you play it with a needle?”

Chad: “A phonograph?”

Me: “Are you talking about a record player?”

Bella: ” Yeah! One of those things…”

This was information she was gathering to write a vocabulary sentence for the word “archaic.” Now how old did THAT make you feel?

Songbae Needs Twitter

Songbae’s been in Asia these last ten days for a wedding in Manila and a few side trips to see family and friends. He’s been entertaining us with his brief emails scatter shot to his family and colleagues from his Blackberry. The last flurry of texts were sent from the Singapore airport yesterday:

Sent: Thu Feb 14 21:32:31 2008
Guy in the wedding party last night passed out during dinner and they had to take him to the hospital.
The father of one of the bridesmaids is the head of the healthcare group at UBS.
The president of the Philippines is apparantely going to be sitting at my table at the reception.

Checked out the local real estate. Can buy a 2-bedroom for $55,000. 83% financing for 5 or 10 years at 15%-17%.

Arrived at a resort in the mountains. There’s a sign that says “bodyguards please check in with security”

Just landed in Singapore. Hope the Mcdonalds isn’t closed.

Fastest immigration/customs I’ve ever been through. The visitor center is pretty impressive, too. They give you free post cards like the ones with ads in the US but these you can mail anywhere in the world for free.

Mcdonalds is in another terminal. It’s after midnight but they said it’s 24 hours. I’m going to try to find a drink first to fortify myself.

Blasted! Found a place with beer but they won’t sell any after midnight. I should have bought something in duty free.

I’d better take it easy on the emails since my friend accidentally took my blackberry charger when I was in Manila so my current battery power has to last me the rest of my trip. Wow, only three of five bars left…

Headline: Singapore Big Mac gets A+

Summary:
Give the Big mac an A+. Warm, right amount of secret sauce and buns in right order. Fries get a B-. Asked for fresh fries but the guy just took them out of the hopper.

Other Comments:
They have computers with free internet.
You squirt the kethcup out of dispensers onto small plates (versus small cups).
They also have “chilli sauce” dispensers.
Local menu items include corn cups, red bean “apple” pies, and apple dippers but they are out of their beef “prosperity” burgers.

Need to eat faster before naseau sets in and get bottle of water to dilute increased sodium content.

Apparently, Singapore is bidding for the 2010 youth olympic games:

“At McDonalds, we embody the Olympic values including Pride, Unity and Teamwork in everything we do, while delivering a memorable dining experience to every customer.”

I like the way on their nutritional charts they re-label “calories” as “energy”.

Ugh, I’m getting the mc-dizzies and can’t finish my fries.

There Goes the Play Money

Last week I heard that there were terrible winds in Joshua Tree. By terrible, I mean that my tenant says he thought the winds were going 70 m.p.h. all night long. It wasn’t a good night to be out either, because apparently roof tiles were blowing off roofs like crazy.

And although I get a bad rap for exaggerating, I think that the the word “crazy” is fitting for having 600 square feet of tile blow off my house alone.

That’s right, 600 square feet.

And yes, my house is insured, but I understand that it is much worse to have a claim on my record and have my house insurance go up than to just swallow the $1145 in roofing bills. (I have a $1000 deductible anyway…)

Then yesterday I brought my car in for a routine check-up: 60,000 mile inspection. What with the rat’s nest they found in the air filter (must be a leftover desert rat), my brakes totally shot, and all the drive belts needing replacing; well, that came to $1600 as well.

And then we’ll be seeing a midwife on Friday, and THAT will be a (worthwhile) chunk o’ cash. (Some of it may be covered by our insurance, but we’ll have to pay for the deductible first seeing as how we’ve just started a new year.)

I guess San Francisco was my last hurrah; it’s the worker bee’s life for me until this baby is born.

I’m not complaining, but I am considering asking for a raise.
